Review of Trades – Vincent Lang Furniture-Maker

vincentVincent dropped off a business card at the building site. He had recently opened his own shop after several years working for a local cabinet-maker.

I asked him for a quote for our kitchen cabinets, the large unit between the bedroom and bathroom, a bathroom vanity and laundry cabinets. He measured the spaces, and returned a CAD drawing and a quotation within three days. (I had to wait for 6 weeks to get the quotation from one of the other cabinet-makers on the coast).

Upon acceptance of his quote, Vincent provided a contract and required a 50% downpayment.

He complied with all of my requests to use sustainable materials and finishes. I had given him a photo of a free-standing cabinet that I liked, and he designed the cabinets and custom-tinted the stain to look like the photo. The door frames are solid alder, and the formaldehyde-free 3/4″ plywood a knotty alder veneer which was custom laid up by the veneer-maker in the Vancouver area. All the drawers are mortise-and-tenon, soft-closing, beautifully-made and fitted. The water-based finish, applied in Vincent’s spray booth, is tough and environmentally-correct. In short, Vincent produced heirloom-quality cabinets. He installed them without damaging our finishes, and came back as often as needed to tweak the cabinets, fix dents and scratches, add a door, make small design changes. And, he stuck to his original quote.DSCN1107

We were so impressed by his work ethic and his products that we also had him build our kitchen nook and refit/install the bookcases that we purchased ready-made. He was willing to re-mill/design the square ash table I found at the thrift store.DSCN1267

The only complaint I have about Vincent is his time estimates: he took much longer than originally stated, and he knows he needs to work on his estimates. But, my position now is that these cabinets were worth waiting for.

Vincent is professional, honest and hard-working. He is willing to work with reclaimed materials, and has a positive attitude about glitches. He says he just wants to produce what we ask for, and keep us happy. Many trades pay lip service to that ethic, few practice it. We think he is one of our brightest gems in this project.
