27) Lighting, Electrical, and Energy Consumption

by Gail on January 20, 2010

It’s ironic that, at this point when we’ve been denied access (for a few weeks at least) to BC Hydro’s electrical connection, I have started thinking about lighting design and energy efficiency.

Over Christmas, we rented a 1970s home on a local lake for our festivities. The Arthur Erickson-designed home allowed natural light to flood the spaces during the day, but at night we were light-seeking fanatics, running around collecting lamps and using extension cords to direct enough light to the table so we could play Speed Scrabble.

To be truly energy-conscious, we would sleep when the sun is down. But, that’s impossible, especially in the winter months. So how to plan the lighting to allow the activities of our lives to proceed with the least amount of energy consumption?

I have created a four-page electrical wish list to give to the electrician, for his input. Now, I am doing research about energy-efficient fixtures. BC Hydro’s web site (there’s that irony again) is good. Once we make our choices, I will post the details.

Oh great, now you’ve used my likeness without prior consent…

Fortunately it’s a perfect picture to bolster your point about lifestyle not necessarily matching design.

Sleeping there made me feel like the richest hobo ever.

Your sleeping bag’s likeness, maybe.

I’m clearly that brown oval thing. It’s true: I do look like a potato.
