9) Don’t be talking to the builders…

by Gail on November 22, 2009

While reading House, it became clear that the builders do not like to have the homeowners (or the architect, really) around, unless we have to answer questions. We waste their time and get in their way.

One of the general contractors even includes a general clause in his contract, to emphasize this position, carrying it one step further (italics mine):

“Owners, friends and neighbours wishing to visit the building site are asked to do so after working hours unless otherwise requested, or an appointment is set up with the building contractor. This ensures that the flow of the building process is not interrupted during working hours.”

I’m not sure how we could control our friends and neighbours, except by sending a note to all of them to pre-empt visiting. But, point taken.chopsaw small

Having said that, our builders, Ron and Ian were very kind to let D help them recently – they even let him use the chop saw and the Skilsaw, and help assemble our first wall. November  20, a banner day! 69 days after we first “laid out” the house on its site with Ron and Doug. We think the progress will seem to pick up the pace, now that the building with wood has started.

This blog is shaping up fantastic. Now I know how you feel when I’m away – it lets me read what’s going on! Nice work.

Well, thank you. And especially thank you for daydreaming during your marketing class last week to make this blog site work.
